May/June 2017 VivaReston Lifestyle Magazine coverWe are very fortunate to be part of a community where we care so much about each other.

We can see it in the many nonprofit organizations that have sprouted in Reston since its inception. Bob Simon’s vision of an inclusive community with plazas to bring people of all backgrounds together and affordable housing for those who need it, has remained throughout all these years. We can see how Restonians spread their kindness through volunteering work, fundraisings, walks, donations, and awareness.

In this edition, we have the nominees of the 2017 Cornerstones Of Our Community – Best of Reston Awards.  All of the nominees have demonstrated their selfless dedication and service to our community and are a model for all of us in making this community better.

In our pages you will also find an exclusive article about the origins of Founder’s Day and how the bronze statue of Bob Simon at Lake Anne Plaza was revealed.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, we have a special section where leaders of our community share with us what they admire the most about their moms. Their stories will touch your heart.

And to pamper Mom and Dad on their special days, we have a list of recommended restaurants where you can bring Mom to enjoy a special Mother’s Day menu, and a list of places where you can take Dad to make him feel special.

Learn about the interesting origins of Mother’s and Father’s Days and why we celebrate those days today.

Our personality in this edition is Robert Goudie, Best of Reston finalist, who tells us about his contributions to the arts, planning, and future of Reston.

For those who want to learn how to excel, both professionally and personally, our article about Leadership Fairfax is a must read.

Now that the weather is warm, Reston gets busier with many events going on every weekend. Learn all about the Northern Virginia Arts Festival, the Spring Festival, Taste of Reston, Love Your Body Yoga Festival, Chalk on the Water at Lake Anne, the concerts at the Reston Town Center, and the Reston Association’s Home Expo. Read also about the many art exhibits and events organized by the Reston Art Gallery, ArtSpace Herndon, League of Reston Artists, Arts Herndon, Reston Community Players, Reston Community Center, and Greater Reston Arts Center, among others.

Also, get to know the friendly faces behind our very own Reston’s Honey Baked Ham, and don’t miss the always interesting article by Virginia Delegate Ken Plum.

To enjoy the summer days, we have a list of recommended places for a getaway weekend that are within driving distance, a list of kid-friendly outings, and a list of dog parks to bring your furry babies outdoors. Our section of photos of our furry neighbors is also back—check it out!

As summer days start and we look into a warmer season, this edition is full of warm stories that I hope you will enjoy. As a Restonian who loves this community, I am very proud to be a part of it and to be able to deliver local content to contribute a little bit to this wonderful community.
