Letter From the Publisher

VivaReston November/December 2016 coverAnother year has gone … but the many memories of 2016—where our tight-knit community lived, worked and played—remain, and make us feel more united than ever. While cranes “decorate” Reston’s skyline, high-rise constructions grow tall,  the second Reston Metro Station is built, public bicycles are installed, and we witness the expansion of a small community into a more urban-like place, we cannot but feel part of history, as protagonists of big changes in our community.

For this holiday edition, we have compiled a thorough list of holiday events, local art exhibits, musical venues and activities for all the family. You can also find great options for catering your holiday party, as well as suggestions for local restaurants where you can celebrate with family or friends.

Meet Margaret Boyd, founding member of the Reston Multicultural Festival, and learn about her admirable accomplishments in the Reston community; learn about the Giving Circle of Hope and their contributions of $1 million to people in need; see the new Lake House, recently inaugurated at Browns Chapel Park; learn about the new safety app for visitors of the Reston Town Center; and find out more about Reston Soccer and Reston Association’s plans to build a brand new turf soccer field. Read also about Davelle Clothiers’ new location at the Reston Town Center and its recent open house; the annual YMCA gala; and the upcoming Martin Luther King celebration at the Reston Community Center.

To look your best during the holidays, Davelle’s founder and CEO will provide our readers with “8 Deadly Sins of Style,” while our Fashion section highlights the new fall and winter trends.

And to do something special during the holidays, learn about the beautiful Shen Yun performing arts that celebrates ancient, 5,000-year-old Chinese dance, now coming back to D.C. Get to know the art exhibits at GRACE; the League of Reston Artists; and Roberta Thole’s  “Then and Now” and the group show “Holiday Sparkle” at the Reston Art Gallery.

In the Health section, learn all about Let’s Smile Dental, where dentists and orthodontists strive to make the whole office experience a fun time for our community’s youngest patients.  Don’t forget to read our usual Dr. Calkins and Dr. Grande columns about dental treatments and the always popular column by Virginia Delegate Ken Plum, “Reston is the Best.”

Read about the first day of classes at Reston’s first university, Clarewood; check out the kids section and the new children’s book, “Reston A to Z”; the new Dulles airport playground; and how students at Terraset Elementary School walked to fight diabetes.

Last but not least, take a look at our Furry Neighbors section, with cute photos of local wagging tails and happy furry faces; and the article about how to introduce a new pet to its new home.

In this holiday season, my best wishes to you, our readers, advertisers, supporters, partners and all who have made Viva Reston Lifestyle magazine what it is today.

May 2017 bring happiness, health, success and much love to all of you.

Happy holidays!
