RCC Collecting Dresses and Accessories for Diva Central Formalwear Event

Reston Community Center is accepting donations of gently used dresses and accessories for its 18th annual Diva Central Dress Drive beginning Saturday, February 1.

From February 1 – 29, RCC will be collecting the items at its Hunters Woods and Lake Anne locations.

In addition to dresses, RCC needs donations of shoes, jewelry, handbags and shawls. Donations are tax-deductible and may be dropped off Monday – Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sundays.

Donations will benefit middle and high school students in Reston and surrounding areas, who can outfit themselves for prom and spring dances for free.

“The cost of attending school dances is marching steadily upward. RCC’s Diva Central is an offering to our community to help local teens find the perfect outfit for a dance without the added expense. From an environmental perspective, it’s a great chance to recycle clothing that is seldom worn more than a handful of times,” said RCC Outreach and Collaboration Director LaTanja Jones. “Donating these gently used items is the perfect way to extend their life and the planet’s.”

Since 2003, Diva Central’s mission has been to promote confidence and self-esteem by providing dresses to area high school students. Middle school students have been added to the event so their school dance needs can also be met. Local businesses generously donate gift certificates and other dance-related services to help the students create a truly memorable night. Collection efforts are also supported by Boston Properties.

This year’s dress and accessories giveaway event is planned for Saturday, March 28, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at RCC Lake Anne, 1609-A Washington Plaza in Reston. All local middle and high school students are invited to attend and “shop” for dresses, shoes and other accessories for free. There will also be door prizes and refreshments. Registration is not required.
