Get Artsy with ArtSpace this Summer

You don’t need to go far this summer to enjoy some of the region’s best creativity thanks to ArtSpace Herndon, which has quite an active line-up planned from July through the Labor Day holiday. From exhibits to concerts and special events, the group promises to keep the entire family busy without breaking the bank. Check out just a few things ArtSpace has in store!

Exhibits:

Between July 11 and August 5, ArtSpace is sponsoring the Town of Herndon Calendar Competition and Exhibit, an open photography competition. Those chosen as finalists will have their work put on display at ArtSpace Herndon’s Post Gallery, and those finalist photographs will also be eligible to receive the Herndon Town Calendar People’s Choice Award. Winners will be a part of the 2018 Herndon Town Calendar. Don’t think you can enter because you’re not a professional? Don’t worry! Both amateurs and pros are welcome to submit their work, so long as the images depict locations within Herndon’s corporate limits.

Just a few days after the contest wraps, you can also check out the Elements exhibit from mixed media and pottery artists Andrew Black and Mercia Hobson. The work will be displayed between August 8 and September 2, and a reception for the show will be held August 18.

For the Kids:

Have a creative child or teen itching to get his or her paintbrush to canvas while school’s out? Bring them to one of four planned Art Evenings, open studio times presented by Gray Goose Studios. Grades K-6 can be artsy from 6pm to 7:30pm, and grades 7-12 will have their chance from 8pm to 9:30pm. The studio times will be held on four different nights: July 12, July 19, August 3 and August 10. All events will be held at ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center Street, for a cost of $20/night. Registration is required; go to www.graygoosestudios.com for more information and to sign up.

Design and Wine:

Don’t worry, the grown-ups haven’t been forgotten by ArtSpace! The next Design and Wine event has been scheduled for July 25 from 7-9pm, and is entitled Painting by the Seashore. Whether you’ve been painting for years or have never before touched an easel, you’ll have an enjoyable, relaxing evening with a completed piece of artwork to take home. Follow instructor Mary Sears as she shows students, step-by-step, how to dive in and give your flair to a beach-themed painting using acrylics. Advance registration is required, and the class size is limited to 25. The cost for the evening is just $35.

If you can’t make it for Design and Wine, be a part of Mercia Hobson’s “Designing with Clay” class on August 29. The cost is again just $35, and the class is scheduled to run from 7pm to 9pm.

Concerts and Events:

Rounding out ArtSpace’s schedule for this summer is a collection of concerts and other events. The first is “Le Hotclub de Biglick,” a gypsy jazz performance set for July 16 from 4pm to 6pm. Food and drink are included in the cost ($30 online and $35 at the door).

If live funk is more your style, ArtSpace is presenting Gina Sobel with “Choose Your Own Adventure” on August 6 from 6pm to 8pm. Tickets are just $12 online or $15 at the door.

Finally, fans of the ambient electronic style will enjoy The Solo Project. For just $12 online/$15 door price, you can enjoy the rhythm between 4pm and 6pm.

See something exciting? We hope you’ll soon be getting artsy with ArtSpace!
