Mobiles and Stabiles by Wayne Schiffelbein on Display July 5 through July 31
Anarray of mobiles suspended from the ceiling and stabiles displayed on tabletops are presented by Wayne Schiffelbein in his show, “Art In Motion,” at Reston Art Gallery and Studios (RAGS) from July 5 through July 31. The show offers at least twenty pieces of Schiffelbein’s latest ‘Calder-esque’ works that range in size from 1 ½ inches to 46 inches in width, each with its own distinctive character in combinations of colorful aluminum and glass balanced with stainless steel.
Schiffelbein became been fascinated with mobiles when he was a student, and through his profession as an architect, which eventually led to his creation of hundreds of these fine art objects. His visit to the Guggenheim Museum’s feature of Alexander Calder’s work in 1964 was an “unforgettable experience” that inspired his career in art. The caliber of Schiffelbein’s work caught the attention of Arts Fairfax, which commissions works from different artists each year to present to recipients of the annual Arts Awards. Schiffelbein was honored to create four of his stabile sculptures for the 2017 presentation. With the eclectic and contemporary appeal of mobiles that lift the eye toward soaring ceilings and sky with the delight of color and movement, gallery visitors could be inspired to acquire their own dynamic art installation for indoor or outdoor display.
Schiffelbein can be found often in his workspace on site at the gallery, where he is pleased to chat about his creations, each subtly inscribed with the completion date and his signature. Art In Motion is open every weekend through July 31 from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. The show can also be viewed at other times by appointment – contact the gallery via RestonArtGallery.com – and can be seen 24/7 through the glass façade of RAGS. While viewing Art In Motion, gallery visitors can also enjoy works displayed by all seven artists of RAGS, as well as the scenery of the lakeside setting. Neighboring the gallery are local restaurants with outdoor seating, and it is just steps away from Lake Anne’s Saturday morning Farmers Market.
Following the Art In Motion show, RAGS will be preparing for “Art for Recovery,” another special exhibit with a particular focus, to be held at the end of August. (More information to come.) Furthering its nurture of art, RAGS offers free, themed Crafts for Kids every Saturday morning at the gallery, April through December, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
