Monica Stroik: IRL

January 17–April 23

Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) presents IRL, a solo exhibition featuring work by painter and video artist Monica Stroik, on view January 17–April 23 at Greater Reston Arts Center at Signature, an innovative satellite gallery that presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of local artists selected by GRACE’s curatorial staff.

Virginia-based artist Monica Stroik creates visual narratives exploring the intersections between the organic, man-made, and virtual worlds we live in. Through a combination of video and paintings selected from her ongoing Cyber series, IRL (online shorthand for “in real life”) investigates concepts of simultaneously being present and disconnected and how the natural world becomes entangled in our digital lives.

Stroik received her MFA from the Mount Royal School of Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore. Her work has been exhibited across the DC metropolitan area including the Arlington Arts Center, Hillyer Art Space, Civilian Art Project, Area 405, and the Glenview Mansion. She completed a studio residency at the Arlington Arts Center and a painting residency at School of Visual Arts in New York. Stroik collaborates with her husband, musician and composer Doug Kallmeyer, and has mixed video for live musical performances at numerous venues including The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, 9:30 Club, Black Cat, Velvet Lounge, and DuPont Underground in Washington, D.C., and Rams Head Live in Baltimore.
